Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Marlins Lose Close Battle to Salisbury

The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) traveled to Salisbury University for dual match competition and fell to the SeaGulls 5-2.

Salisbury claimed their first doubles win as Gibelle Beaujon and Olivia Hall defeated Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann 6-1 at #1. Meena Lennon and Lina Hackner led their opponents at the second line of doubles, but struggled to close, losing 6-4 and awarding the SeaGulls the doubles point. Mikisha Thomas and Zoe Vliegen had opportunities at the third spot, but were unable to execute the win, falling short 7-5.

In singles play, Jette Hafermann found herself down 4-1 against Ridgley Lake, but gained control of the match and refused to drop another game. Hafermann won 6-4, 6-0 to level the match at 1-1.

Meena Lennon continued her singles success from last weekend, defeating Evelyn Whiteside 6-2, 6-4 at #4 to put the Marlins ahead 2-1.

Salisbury picked up straight set wins at the top two singles spots over Tuva Flink and Zoe Vliegen to gain a 3-2 overall advantage.

The match came down to three set battles by Lina Hackner at #3 and Sarah Reich at #6. Hackner won the first set 6-2 against Lily Muir, but Muir won the second set 6-3 to force a third set to decide the match. Sarah Reich also went to a third set after losing the first set and winning the second. Muir prevailed over Hackner 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the win for Salisbury; and soon after, Sarah Reich came up short against Katherine Raab 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

The young Marlin team fought hard at every position in singles and doubles, making significant progress from last year's team against Salisbury. This match provided the women with critical experience to build on as the season progresses.

Next, the Marlins will host ODAC opponent, Hollins University, on Sunday, March 16 at 10 a.m.
