The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (3-0) defeated Montclair State in walk-off fashion 7-6 to stay undefeated.
Gino Meienschein led the Marlins as he went 2-for-2 with a double, and three RBI including the game-winning RBI.
Noah Burton went 1-for-3 with two RBI and teammate
Clay Clarke was 1-for-4, scored one run, and one RBI.
Ryan Cason got the win on the mound as pitched 2.0 innings to close out the game, allowed one hit, zero runs, and had one strikeout.
The action began in the second inning when Virginia Wesleyan struck first. Ty James and Marcell Whitfield scored on a two-RBI single by Noah Burton, giving the Marlins an early 2-0 lead. Montclair State responded in the third, with Matt Murphy driving in a run on a single, scoring Lyle Egenhause to make it 2-1.
The Red Hawks took their first lead in the fifth inning. Egenhause doubled in Zach Stearns, then Murphy followed up with a single, scoring Egenhause and putting Montclair State ahead 3-2. A passed ball allowed Murphy to advance to third, and another passed ball brought in James Levis, giving Montclair State a 4-2 advantage. The scoring continued in the fifth when Ben Diers singled to left, driving in Murphy for a 5-2 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan fought back in the seventh as Edgar Harwood doubled in Clay Clarke to cut the lead to 6-3, and Gino Meienschein followed with a two-RBI double, bringing in Nick Valentin and Harwood to close the gap to 6-5.
In the eighth inning, Virginia Wesleyan tied the game when Clarke flied out to left, scoring Josh Goodrich on a sacrifice fly. Then in the ninth, Meienschein came through again, singling in Valentin and Reynaldo Perez-Menedez to complete the comeback and won on the walk-off single.
