The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (1-0) won their first game of the season against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan 8-4.
The first run of the game was scored at the bottom of the third inning by North Carolina Wesleyan; and they scored another at the bottom of the fourth to go up 2-0.
The Marlins managed to tie the game at the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded,
Marcell Whitfield walked, sending
John Bastiaans home for VWU's first run of the day. On the next play,
Ty James was hit by a pitch, which awarded the Marlins with a second run by
Nick Valentin. North Carolina Wesleyan scored a single run at the bottom of the fifth to gain the lead at 3-2.
In the top of the sixth inning,
Nick Valentin scored a home run with three RBI, giving the Marlins a 5-3 lead.
Clay Clarke singled, and then Edgar Hardwood doubled, sending Clarke home for another run to put the Marlins ahead 6-3 in the top of the seventh inning. The Battling Bishops scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The eighth inning saw both teams getting two hits; but the Marlins were able to execute with two runs, and North Carolina Wesleyan failed to score.
