The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-12, 1-9 ODAC) was defeated by Ferrum 51-45.
Brianna Long led the offense with 11 points shooting 5-for-6 from the field and 1-for-1 from the charity stripe; had six rebounds, four steals, and one assist.
Keagan Schwab needed 10 points to hit 1,000 career points and she tallied 10, shooting 4-for-17 from the field and 2-for-6 from deep; she recorded two rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Jaiden Hunter registered eight points shooting 3-for-3 from the field, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line; added six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks, and teammate
Bre Robinson had eight points shooting 2-for-4 from the field 4-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed four rebounds, two assists, one block, and four steals.
The Panthers started strong jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Virginia Wesleyan stormed back with a 9-0 run to lead 11-10 with 2:26 left in the first quarter. Ferrum outscored the Marlins 7-2 the rest of the quarter and went up 17-13.
Ferrum continued their scoring streak and went on a 9-2 run to lead 26-15 at the 6:23 mark of the second quarter. The Marlins responded with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, bringing the score to 26-21 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, VWU made some great adjustments and rallied back with a 13-6 run to give them a 34-32 lead with 51 seconds left in the quarter. Long led the team during that stretch and scored seven points in the quarter. The Panther scored a bucket to tie the game at 34-34 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers played hard and went on a 9-0 run to lead 43-34 at the 6:14 mark. Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 43-39, but Ferrum countered with a 4-1 run to increase the lead to 47-40. The Marlins fought back and outscored the Panthers 5-4 in the last two minutes of play but were unable to complete the comeback to fall 51-45 to Ferrum.
