Zar and Kamgaing Shatter School Records at Marlin First Chance Meet

Virginia Wesleyan opened its indoor season with a strong showing at the Marlin First Chance Meet, highlighted by two school records from standout freshmen Ester Zar and Denise Kamgaing.

The day belonged to Ester Zar, who delivered two historic races. In the 5000m, Zar ran a school-record 18:20.11 to place 5th overall and rewrite the Marlins record book in her collegiate debut at the distance. She followed it up with another standout performance in the 3000m, placing 10th in 10:34.81, a time that established her dominance with a time that ranks second in the Virginia Wesleyan record book. 

Kamgaing's day was capped by a historic performance in the weight throw, where she launched a school-record 15.97m to capture first place in the event. Swanson added a fifth-place finish with a throw of 12.60m, and Hill placed 13th with a mark of 7.46m.

In the women's 60m prelims, senior Lyric Hoggard led the Marlins with a ninth-place finish in 8.01 seconds, while freshman Mikayla Greene followed closely in 10th at 8.02. Sophomore Katelyn Griffin placed 21st in 8.29, and senior Anisah Kersey finished 23rd in 8.33 to round out a deep group of Marlin sprinters.

The 200m saw Greene continue her impressive debut, placing ninth in the field with a time of 25.96. Hoggard added a 12th-place effort in 26.51, and Kersey crossed in 27.68 for 31st. Griffin registered a DQ after a violation in Heat 7.

In the long jump, sophomore Katelyn Griffin placed seventh overall with a mark of 5.22m, while freshman Alani Hampton finished 12th after jumping 4.81m. Hampton also competed in the triple jump, where she placed sixth with a leap of 9.81m. In the high jump, junior Maria Plummer was unable to record a height.

The Marlins excelled in the throwing events, led by senior Mackenzie Swanson, who won the shot put title with a throw of 12.14m. Sophomore Denise Kamgaing placed sixth in the event with a mark of 10.63m, followed by sophomore Bailey Schottin in 10th at 9.66m, junior Zantia Durand in 12th at 9.13m, freshman Desi Hill in 17th at 8.19m, and freshman Jade Turner in 22nd at 7.18m.
