The Virginia Wesleyan men's track and field team opened its indoor season with a full slate of competitive performances at the Marlin First Chance Meet, highlighted by multiple top-10 finishes and a victory in the triple jump.
The highlight of the day came in the triple jump, where junior
Jordan Fielder captured the event title with an impressive opening-meet mark of 14.06 meters, giving the Marlins their lone victory of the meet.
In the 60-meter dash prelims, sophomore
Jacob Little clocked a 7.46 to place 37th overall in a deep field of sprinters.
The 60-meter hurdles prelims featured a pair of Marlins in the top 10. Sophomore
Jasha Brewington qualified for finals with an 8.92 to finish eighth, while senior
Ja'Marri Henderson followed close behind in 10th at 8.97.
In the 200 meters, senior
Jordan Hall led the Marlins with a strong 19th-place finish in 22.84. Junior
Javon Hills placed 23rd with a time of 23.04, followed by junior Da'Quan Smith in 30th at 23.71. Little returned to the track to complete the event in 25.31 for 40th.
The Marlins placed two runners in the top six of the 800 meters, as junior
Fisher Stone crossed in 2:03.21 for sixth place. Junior
Matthew Hodge followed with a 12th-place finish in 2:12.76.
In the mile, freshman
Henning Olofsson recorded a time of 5:12.04, earning 17th in his collegiate debut.
The 3000 meters showcased the Marlins' distance depth, with senior
Ryan Koval leading the group in ninth place at 9:27.37. Sophomore
Casey Black finished 11th in 9:36.99, and senior
Jerry Watson followed just behind in 12th at 9:38.10.
Black and Watson returned for strong showings in the 5000 meters, where Black placed sixth in 16:38.02. Watson secured eighth with a time of 16:45.04, rounding out a productive day for the distance squad.
In field events, Hall excelled once again, placing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.61 meters, while Little recorded a mark of 4.14 meters to take 29th.
Freshman
Will Hepburn led VWU in the shot put, throwing 10.59 meters to finish 15th. Junior
Malik Williams added a mark of 8.47 meters for 22nd.
In the weight throw, Williams placed eighth with an 11.83-meter toss. Kareem-Ojo finished 15th at 8.95 meters, and Hepburn landed 18th with an 8.58-meter result.
The Marlins closed the meet with a 14th-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, as the squad of W. Nakano,
Fisher Stone,
Henning Olofsson, and
Matthew Hodge posted a time of 3:43.09.
