Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (6-1) defeated Eastern Mennonite University (2-5) at home on Wednesday, October 3rd, by a score of 70-65.
Malcolm Velmar led the way with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including three threes and four rebounds.
Khai Seargeant and Omari Deveaux also added 15 points each, with Seargeant grabbing six boards and Deveaux going 6-for-9 at the line.
Amari Moorer contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while
Paul Anderson and T.J. East combined for 13 points and eight rebounds to round out the Marlins effort.
Virginia Wesleyan came out with an early 7-0 lead over EMU with three pointers by
Paul Anderson and
Malcolm Velmar. EMU fought back with a 10-2 run against the Marlins to take their first lead of the game. The Marlins responded throughout the rest of the half, going on a 13-4 run to end the first half with a leading score of 28-21.
Out of the break, both teams come out firing, going back and forth for the first 10 minutes. Both teams going back to back for shots with a 14-11 run, with Marlins still taking the lead. With less than 8 minutes left on the clock, both teams go on a 9-9 run but the score showing Marlins in the lead 51-39. EMU come firing out in the last 5 minutes going on a 14-2 run, bringing the the score to 59-59 with 2:20 left on the clock. The teams go shot for shot, but the Marlins take the lead going on a 5-2 run with less than a minute on the clock with a score of 66-61. With a little back and forth in the last seconds, the Marlins are able to secure the win with a score of 70-65.
