Virginia Wesleyan turned in a complete three-day performance at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, with every swimmer and relay contributing results.
The Marlins opened competition in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where the A team of
Cael Long,
Mason Pifer,
Tommy Saeger, and
Brandon Temple combined for a strong seventh-place finish in 1:28.76, while the B team of
Matthew Thomas,
Gavin Wehr, Brayden Canterburry, and
Reilly Shaffer added an 11th-place relay time of 1:34.83.
The meet's first individual event featuring VWU athletes was the 500-yard freestyle, where sophomore
Tommy Saeger finished 34th in 5:08.79, followed closely by sophomore
Matthew Thomas in 36th at 5:12.28. First-year
Camden Holmes also raced the event from the prelim session, placing 38th in 5:16.37, while senior
Logan Schohn added a 40th-place time of 5:24.32, giving the Marlins four swimmers in the field. Holmes and Schohn returned later for the 200-yard freestyle, where Holmes posted a 35th-place finish in 1:58.41 and Schohn followed in 36th with a 2:01.44, while sophomore
Reilly Shaffer swam the event earlier in the meet structure and recorded a 33rd-place finish in 1:54.18.
The Marlins showed their greatest depth in the sprint freestyle races, beginning with the 50-yard freestyle, where sophomore
Mason Pifer placed 35th in 23.05, sophomore
Reilly Shaffer finished 40th in 23.54, first-year
Gavin Wehr touched 41st in 23.76, and first-year Brayden Canterburry completed the quartet with a 43rd-place finish in 24.64. Temple added Virginia Wesleyan's top sprint freestyle placement of the meet in the 100-yard freestyle, reaching the bonus final and delivering an 18th-place finish in 48.65.
VWU added scoring presence in stroke events as well. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Canterburry finished 30th in 1:10.73, and Wehr followed in 31st in 1:14.83. The Marlins also appeared in the 200-yard IM, where senior
Cael Long reached the bonus final and placed 17th in 1:59.82, giving Virginia Wesleyan its top IM performance of the weekend. Long later produced one of the meet's most impressive individual swims for the program in the 100-yard butterfly, reaching the championship final and securing a 7th-place finish in 50.92.
Pifer also earned a finals appearance in the 100-yard backstroke, as his prelim time of 55.53 advanced him into the next round of competition and made him the Marlins' top backstroke representative at the invitational.
Relay strength continued throughout the meet for Virginia Wesleyan. In the 200-yard medley relay, the A squad of Pifer, Long, Saeger, and Temple placed 10th in 1:39.34, while the B team of Thomas, Canterburry, Wehr, and Shaffer finished 13th in 1:48.02. The Marlins returned for the 400-yard medley relay, where the A team—again featuring Pifer, Long, Saeger, and Temple—finished 11th in 3:38.68, with the B relay of Holmes, Canterburry, Wehr, and Schohn following in 13th place at 4:10.62.
In the longest relay of the weekend, the 800-yard freestyle relay, Virginia Wesleyan's A team of Shaffer, Thomas, Schohn, and Holmes posted a 12th-place finish in 7:43.40, adding another complete-team effort to the overall relay slate. The Marlins closed the meet with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the A team of Long, Pifer, Saeger, and Temple delivered a 9th-place finish in 3:16.56, while the B relay of Thomas, Shaffer, Wehr, and Holmes added a 13th-place time of 3:28.74, marking the final official swim of the weekend for the program.
