Balanced Attack Leads Marlins to Big Win Over Apprentice School 91-63

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (2-1) defeated the Newport News Apprentice School 91-63.

The Marlins were led by Amari Moorer with 15 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field, 1-for-1 from three-point territory, grabbed eight rebounds, two assists, one block, and four steals. Omari DeVeaux registered 15 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, with two rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Miles Hancock had nine points, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, 3-for-4 from the free throw line, 10 rebounds, and one assist.

VWU started the game hot, jumping out to a 9-2 lead early, and extended their lead, going on a 7-4 run to hold a 16-6 lead over the Builders. The Marlins held a 21-8 lead at the 12:33 mark, then the two teams went on a 2-minute and 55-second scoreless drought. Until the Apprentice school went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 21-15. However, Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 9-2 run to increase their lead to 30-17 with 4:52 left in the first half.

Over the last five minutes of the first half, the two teams traded points with the Marlins narrowly outscoring the Builders 8-6, to bring the score to 38-23. The Apprentice school countered with a 6-5 run to end the half with the score at 43-29 heading into the break.

Virginia Wesleyan started the second half well, going on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 48-29 at the 18:47 mark in the second half. The Builders countered with a 5-3 run to cut the Marlins' advantage to 51-24, but the Marlins' offense caught fire and went on an 8-0 run to increase the lead to 59-34 at the 16:10 mark. The Builders scored the next two points to cut the Marlins' lead to 59-38, but the Marlins countered with a 5-0 run to lead 64-38.

Over the next five minutes, the teams played tough, with Virginia Wesleyan outscoring the Apprentice School 13-7 over that period of time to lead 77-45 at the 7:11 mark. The Builders continued to score, going on a 7-6 run to cut the host lead down to 83-52. However, the Marlins made back-to-back threes on two possessions to increase their lead to 89-54 with 2:24 left in the game. The Builders surged in the last 81 seconds of the game, going on a 9-2 run to bring the score to 91-63, but the Marlins' lead was too great, and they sealed the win at 91-63.
