The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (3-1) defeated Virginia Beach Rival Regent 74-58.
Omari DeVeaux led the offense with 21 points, shooting 9-for-18 from the field, 1-for-4 from deep, and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe, nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Amari Moorer tallied 18 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point territory,four rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
Miles Hancock recorded 13 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor, had 12 rebounds, and one assist.
Virginia Wesleyan came out strong, building a 4-1 lead early, but Regent came back to bring the score to 6-5. However, the Marlins hit a three to increase their lead to 9-5 at the 15:59 mark. Both teams went three minutes without scoring until Demier Pollard hit two free throws to increase the Marlins' lead to 11-5.
Over the next four and a half minutes, the Royals rallied, going on a 12-8 run to cut the lead to 19-17. The Marlins countered with a 7-5 run to lead 26-22, but Regent responded with a three to cut the lead to 26-25. Virginia Wesleyan's offense ignited and went on a 10-1 run to close out the half with a 36-26 lead.
Out of the break, Regent came out going on an 8-2 break to cut the Marlins' lead to 38-34. VWU responded with a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 45-34 at the 15:36 mark. The two teams traded points over the next two minutes to bring the score to 50-39. Over the next three minutes, the Royals outscored the Marlins 7-6 to cut the lead to 56-46 with 10:23 left in the half.
The Marlins fought back and outscored the Royals 11-8 to bring the score to 67-54 with 5:07 left in the game. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the game with a 7-4 run to seal the 74-58 win over their Virginia Beach Rival, Regent.
