The Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team (12-3-2, 7-1-1 ODAC) picked up a dramatic 1-0 victory over Roanoke, powered by a late goal from senior defender
Stephanie Koblish.
The Marlins and Maroons battled through a scoreless 87 minutes, with both teams trading chances but unable to find the back of the net. Virginia Wesleyan controlled possession for much of the match, outshooting Roanoke 20-8 and holding a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The breakthrough came in the 89th minute when Koblish capitalized on a setup from
Alaina Alston, firing home the game-winning goal to put VWU ahead 1-0. The assist was Alston's first of the day, capping a strong performance off the bench that included four shots and one on goal.
Defensively,
Riley Keefe was steady in goal, collecting five saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season. The Marlins' back line, anchored by Koblish,
Paige Bissell, and
Alex Ortega, held Roanoke without a corner opportunity and limited quality looks throughout the match.
