The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (11-3-2, 6-1-1 ODAC) earned its sixth conference victory of the season with a dominant 5–0 win over Randolph-Macon (8-6-2, 6-2-0 ODAC) on Wednesday evening at Foster Field at the Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, the Marlins exploded offensively in the second, netting five goals in just over 20 minutes of play.
Alexis Manfredi opened the scoring in the 65th minute, finishing off a pass from
Shyenne Diaz to give VWU the lead. Moments later, Diaz added her own goal, her ninth of the season, to double the advantage.
Emma Nguyen extended the margin in the 70th minute with her first goal of the year, followed by late strikes from
Courtney Mills and
Charlotte Gantt, with assists from
Grace Engelbert and Mills, respectively.
Goalkeepers
Riley Keefe and
Sophia Valenzano combined for a shutout and three saves on the night, with Keefe logging 76 minutes and Valenzano closing out the final 14. The Marlins out shot the Yellow Jackets 22–9 and holding a 5–1 edge in corner kicks.
With the win, Virginia Wesleyan improves to 6–1–1 in ODAC play and continues its strong push toward postseason competition.
The Marlins return to action on Saturday, October 25, at 3:00 PM, traveling to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke College in another key ODAC matchup.
