Marlins Fall in Double Overtime to Marian

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (4-7) was edged out in a hard-fought double overtime battle against Marian University (Wis.) (8-3), falling 1-0 at home on Friday evening.

Goalkeeper DJ Holsclaw once again anchored the defense, playing all 72 minutes and recording six saves in the effort.

The Marlins were competitive throughout regulation, matching Marian with seven penalty corners and staying even on shots with seven attempts of their own, two of which were on target. Virginia Wesleyan had its strongest offensive push in the third quarter, recording three corners and two shots, but couldn't capitalize.

Neither team found the back of the cage during game time, forcing two overtime periods. Marian broke the deadlock by scoring the golden goal to lift the Sabres to victory.

Despite the loss, Virginia Wesleyan showed grit, keeping pace with Marian statistically and holding them scoreless through 72 minutes of play.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to ODAC action on Saturday, October 18 at 3:00 PM, traveling to Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va.
