The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey (4-6, 1-2 ODAC) team battled hard, but came up short against Bridgewater College, falling 2-0 in ODAC play.
Landry Meyer had the most chances of any Marlin on offense with seven shots and three on target. DJ Holsclaw played the full 60 minutes in net, allowed two goals, and had eight saves in the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, both teams traded early opportunities, with Virginia Wesleyan registering two shots and a save from its defense to keep the game even. The Eagles broke through midway through the second quarter as they found the back of the cage at the 25:58 mark, giving Bridgewater a 1-0 advantage.
Just before halftime, the Eagles extended their lead as they converted an good opportunity at the 30-minute mark to make it 2-0 heading into the break.
The Marlins came out with renewed energy in the second half, generating five shots in the third quarter and applying steady pressure through multiple penalty corners. However, Bridgewater's defense stood firm, turning away every attempt to preserve the shutout.
Virginia Wesleyan finished with 11 shots, including four on goal, while Bridgewater tallied 15 shots with 10 on target. The Marlins earned four penalty corners to the Eagles' seven.
