The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (10-2, 3-0 ODAC) defeated non-conference opponent Salisbury 61-56.
Khai Seargeant led the team with 22 points shooting 9-for-17 from the field and was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc; he had two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Amari Moorer tallied a double-double with 13 points shooting 6-for-13 from the field, and 1-for-2 from the free throw line; grabbed 11 rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Paul Anderson had eight points, shooting 2-for-5 from deep and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe; he had three rebounds, three blocks, one assist, and one steal.
Virginia Wesleyan started the game well and built a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. However, the Seagulls responded with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 6-5. Over the next five minutes, Salisbury went on a 10-7 run to lead the Marlins 15-13.
At the 8:10 mark, the host had a 19-16 lead, but the Marlins went on a 5-1 run to take a 21-20 lead with 7:13 left in the first half. The two teams traded points and were tied at 25 all at the 2:47 mark. The Seagulls outscored the Marlins 7-5 the rest of the half to lead 32-30 at halftime.
The Marlins came out on fire in the second half as Seargeant hit a three for their first possession and went on a 13-1 run to lead 43-33. Salisbury did not go away as they chipped away at the Marlins' lead and brought it down to 48-40 with 12:20 left in the second half.
Over the next five minutes, the Seagulls kept up the pressure and rallied with a 9-2 run to bring the score to 50-49. The Marlins responded with two threes to give them a 56-54 lead with 3:54 left in the half. After two scoreless minutes, the Seagulls made two free throws to tie the game at 56-56. However, the Marlins played lockdown defense the rest of the game, which fueled a 5-0 run in the final minutes to seal the 61-56 win over Salisbury.
