Dave Macedo Hits Career Win 500 with a 69-50 Victory Over No. 24 Guilford

The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team (12-3, 5-1 ODAC) continued their conference season success with an impressive win over No. 24 Guilford, winning 69-50. 

With the win over No. 24 Guilford, Head Coach Dave Macedo hit 500 career wins. To date, he has a .728 winning percentage in his 25th season coaching the Marlins Men's Basketball team.

Amari Moorer led the Marlins with 18 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point territory, and 6-for-7 from the free throw line; Moorer registered six rebounds, three assists, one block, and four steals. Omari DeVeaux tallied 16 points as he shot 4-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line; he tallied four rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Khai Seargeant was the third highest scorer for the Marlins with 11 points, going 4-for-8 from the field, 1-for-2 from three-point territory, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line; he recorded three rebounds, two assists, and one block. 

Guilford scored the first basket of the game to lead 2-0, but Virginia Wesleyan took control, going up 5-2 as Amari Moorer made two foul shots and Omari DeVeaux capitalized with a three-pointer. Guilford responded with a basket to bring the score to 5-4 for VWU. After a scoring drought between 16:35 and 14:34, Amari Moorer rebounded his own layup and made the bucket to finish the play to put the Marlins ahead 7-4.

The Marlins went on to score 18 consecutive points against the Quakers to gain a convincing 25-6 lead with 9:16 left in the first half. After the Quakers made a free throw, VWU strung together another run, making seven points in a row to bring the score to 32-7. Guilford managed to outscore the Marlins 15-7 at the end of the first half, entering halftime 39-22 with the Marlins in front. 

Guilford had a promising start to the second half with a dunk, but Amari Moorer responded with back-to-back plays, scoring five points in a row for the Marlins to lead 44-26 with 18:13 on the clock. After a scoreless two minutes, the home team executed a layup, but soon after fouled the Marlins forcing Waylo Wilson and TJ East to the line, who each made both free throws. The Quakers worked their way back into the game, outscoring VWU 11-3 over the next five minutes, to find themselves within twelve points of the Marlins. 

Virginia Wesleyan remained solid at the free-throw line to maintain their lead as Guilford continued to foul them. With just over five minutes remaining, Omari DeVeaux sunk a three-pointer to stretch the Marlin lead to 18, and Guilford was unable to recover. The Marlins kept the Quakers from scoring in the final two and a half minutes of play, ending the contest with a final score of 69-50.
