The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (7-1) defeated non-conference opponent Keystone 3-2.
Landry Meyer led the team with two goals and one assist on three shots,
Dani Poulsen scored one goal, and teammate
Lauren Hedspeth had an assist.
Berkley Miller played 60 minutes in net, allowed two goals, and had three saves.
After a long day of travel for the Marlins, the team started strong with a goal from
Landry Meyer in the first minute of play to give VWU a 1-0 lead. The Giants responded with a goal in the second minute to tie the game at 1-1. Then, at the 9:14 mark, the Marlins found the back of the net again as
Dani Poulsen scored with an assist from
Landry Meyer.
The second quarter had fewer goals, but the Marlins still kept up the pressure as
Landry Meyer scored her second goal of the game with an assist from
Lauren Hedspeth on a penalty corner for VWU. Virginia Wesleyan led 3-1 and outshot their opponents 6-4 with all six shots on goal.
In the second half, Keystone made some big adjustments to attack the Marlins defense. In the 52nd they scored to bring the score to 3-2, but
Berkley Miller and the Marlins' defense held strong and sealed the 3-2 win over Keystone.
