Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Marlins 1-0 Overtime Win Over St. Mary's (MD.) Extends Win Streak to Seven

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (7-1) defeated St. Mary's (MD.) 1-0 in overtime for the first time since 2001.

Landry Meyer led the team with an overtime goal, assisted by Lauren Hedspeth. Berkley Miller played 61:51 net for her fifth shutout of the season and her sixth win this year.

The Marlins started strong and created better chances in the first quarter resulting in one shot. However, the Seahawks came out in the second quarter and tallied two shots to take a 2-1 advantage in shots by the end of the first half. A hard-fought first 30 minutes ended with the game deadlocked at 0-0.

Coming out of halftime, St. Mary's put together some great chances that led to two shots on goal and two penalty corners. The Marlins goalie Berkley Miller was up to the challenge and kept the game scoreless through three quarters.

The Marlins came out in the fourth quarter on a mission, creating several chances that resulted in a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Seahawks had chances as well, forcing another Miller save but neither team was able to score to force overtime.

Overtime opened up space for both teams, and the Seahawks kept the ball in the offensive zone for the first minute of extra time. Virginia Wesleyan finally broke out of their defensive zone, put the Seahawks on the back foot, and forced two penalty corners. Lauren Hedspeth started the corner with a pass to Landry Meyer who hit an impressive shot past the near post of the Seahawks keeper to win the game.
