The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (4-1) defeated non-conference opponent Meredith 6-0, with goals from five players;
Mary Ruffin,
Dani Poulsen,
Katherine Druiett,
Lauren Hedspeth, and
Landry Meyer.
Landry Meyer led the offense scored one goal, and had two assists, with eight shots on goal,
Dani Poulsen scored two goals off three shots on goal, and
Katherine Druiett tallied one goal and one assist with four shots on goal.
Berkeley Miller had a shutout in net as she played 45 minutes and had one save in goal for her third win of the season.
The Marlins started strong as they were awarded a penalty corner in the first minute of the game to put pressure on the Angels' defense. Despite their strong start, Virginia Wesleyan was held scoreless until the ninth minute of the game when
Mary Ruffin scored a rebounded goal after a VWU penalty corner. Several minutes later, the Marlins had two more penalty corners, which led to a shot on goal by
Landry Meyer that was saved by the Meredith keeper. Just before the end of the quarter, Dani Paulsen scored a goal with a nice pass from
Landry Meyer to put VWU up 2-0 heading into the second quarter.
Midway through the second quarter,
Katherine Druiett scored a goal off a penalty corner with an assist from
Regan Wells to put the Marlins up 3-0. Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Angels 14-1 in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Marlins did not let up as
Dani Poulsen tapped in a goal off a shot from
Landry Meyer to put the Marlins up 4-0, three minutes into the third quarter. VWU kept up the pressure and
Lauren Hedspeth scored the Marlins' fifth goal to go up 5-0 just before the end of the quarter.
The Marlins added one more goal in the fourth quarter scored by
Landry Meyere with an assist from
Katherine Druiett to seal the 6-0 win and fourth win in a row for the Virginia Wesleyan Field Hockey team.
