The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (3-1) defeated Gwynedd Mercy 4-1 on the road.
Mary Ruffin led the team with two goals,
Landry Meyer scored one goal, and
Katherine Druiett put the game out of reach for the fourth goal of the game.
DJ Holsclaw played 60 minutes of the game in the net, allowed one goal, and made one save.
The Marlins started the game quickly, scoring in the first three minutes of the game, as
Mary Ruffin scored the first goal of the game with a nice assist from
Lauren Hedspeth to take a 1-0 lead. The Griffins responded at the 13:03 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
The second quarter was a defensive battle, with no shots on goal from either team to head into the break deadlock at 1-1.
Halftime adjustments worked wonders for Virginia Wesleyan as
Landry Meyer scored off a corner. The Griffin keeper saved
Mary Ruffin's shot, and Meyer was there to put the rebound in the back of the net putting VWU up 2-1. Later in the third, Virginia Wesleyan scored their third goal, as
Mary Ruffin scored off a nice pass from Isabella Rogers to lead 3-1.
Virginia Wesleyan scored again at the beginning of the fourth quarter as
Katherine Druiett scored off a penalty corner to seal the victory over the Griffin.
