The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (5-2, 2-0 ODAC) defeated Averett 67-50 for their second ODAC win of the year.
Amari Moorer led the Marlins with 19 points shooting 9-for-14 from the field and 1-for-2 from deep; he grabbed six rebounds, four assists, and had one block,
Khai Seargeant scored 13 points shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line; had three rebounds, two assists, and one steal, and
Omari DeVeaux had 11 points shooting 4-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc; registered five rebounds, four assists, one block, and two steals.
The Marlins came out hot jumping out to a 13-2 run with six different scorers in the first seven minutes of the game. The Cougars finally got some offense going with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 15-9 midway through the first half.
Over the next seven minutes, both defenses stepped up, but the Cougars outscored the Marlins 8-5 to cut the lead to 22-18 with 3:25 left in the first half. Virginia Wesleyan ended the half with a 4-2 run to lead 26-20 heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Virginia Wesleyan went on a 12-2 run with nine points from
Amari Moorer to extend their lead to 38-22. The Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to bring the score to 38-29.
Waylo Wilson completed the three-point play and increased the lead to 41-29. The Cougars went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 41-35 to force a VWU timeout.
Virginia Wesleyan responded with an 8-3 run to increase their lead to 49-38. The Marlins continued their pressure and outscored the host 7-3 to lead 56-41 with 4:35 left in the half. Averett kept grinding and went on a 5-0 run to cut the Marlins lead to 56-46. VWU was dominant and outscored the Cougars 11-4 in the last three minutes of the game to seal the 67-50 win over Averett.
