Marlins Hand Ferrum First Loss of the Season

The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team (6-2, 3-0 ODAC) defeated Ferrum College in conference play by a score of 65-45. 

Waylo Wilson and Amari Moorer highlighted the night with double-doubles. Waylo Wilson scored fourteen points, going 5-for-9 from the field and 4-for-9 from the free throw line; he also recorded twelve rebounds. Amari Moorer tallied eleven points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field, 0-for-1 from three point territory, and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. Khai Seargeant also had a strong performance, contributing fourteen points, going 4-for-14 from the field, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line; he made four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. 

Amari Moorer started the night with a jumper to put the Marlins on the scoreboard first. Ferrum took an early lead in the first half, outscoring the Marlins 8-4 with 15:18 on the clock, but the Marlins strung together a 9-2 scoring run between 11:35 and 8:19 to claim a 17-16 lead. 

Both teams struggled to execute between 8:19 and 5:49, but Ferrum ended the scoring drought with a layup to regain the lead by 18-17. Ferrum followed up with a jumper to go up 20-17, but Khai Seargeant made a three-pointer to level the game 20-20. The Marlins continued to display confidence from beyond the arc as Omari DeVeaux made two three-pointers and Demeir Pollard made one in the final three minutes of the first half. The Marlins went into halftime with a 29-24 lead over Ferrum. 

Ferrum started the second half with a jumper, but Virginia Wesleyan quickly extended their lead to nine points as they went on a 6-0 scoring run. Amari Moorer registered a steal with 17:26 on the clock and finished the play with a dunk to lead by double digits for the first time in the game by a score of 38-28. After scoreless play between 17:06 and 14:28, T.J. East scored a layup to put the Marlins ahead by eleven. 

Virginia Wesleyan and Ferrum exchanged baskets between 13:17 and 11:07 to maintain the eleven point deficit in favor of the Marlins. Ferrum struggled to execute their shots at the end of the half while the Marlins capitalized off rebounds, extending their lead to twenty points by the end of the game. 

Next, Virginia Wesleyan will host Averett, North Carolina Wesleyan and Wisconsin-Whitewater in the North Beach Plastic Surgery Winter Classic.
