The 3rd seeded Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team (10-5-3, 8-2 ODAC) avenged their conference play loss against 2nd seeded University of Lynchburg with a 3-2 come from behind victory in the ODAC semifinals.
Freshman,
Emma Nguyen, highlighted the day for the Marlins with two goals. Graduate student,
Camille Jernigan, also scored a goal.
Lynchburg scored early off an error within two minutes of play. In the 32nd minute of the game, the Hornets extended their lead to 2-0 off a penalty kick. The Hornets finished the first half with 11 shots compared to the Marlins' four.
The two point deficit remained until the 67th minute as
Emma Nguyen's perfectly placed free kick soared over the head of the Lynchburg goalie to put the Marlins within one point of the Hornets.
The Marlins kept their aggressive momentum late into the second half as
Camille Jernigan scored to level the game at 2-2.
With less than two minutes remaining and the potential to go into overtime,
Emma Nguyen headed in the game winning goal for the Marlins off a header from
Shyenne Diaz.
Allie Greco played the entire game in goal for the Marlins, allowing two goals and recording four saves.
The Marlins will compete in the ODAC championship on Sunday, November 10 against Washington and Lee.
