Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Continues Winning Ways with a 2-0 Win Over Roanoke

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (10-1, 2-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent 2-0. The last time the Marlins defeated Roanoke was in October of 2016. Virginia Wesleyan now sits at the top of the ODAC standing with an undefeated conference record and has the best offense in the conference scoring 41 goals so far this season.

Lauren Hedspeth scored the game-winning goal for the Marlins, Isabelle Rogers had an unassisted goal, and Landry Meyer added an assist.

Berkley Miller recorded her ninth win of the season and made three saves in the win over the Maroons.

Before the start of the game, the Marlins honored their five-member senior class composed of; Meadow Spears, Kylie Brown, Olivia Winslow, Emily Moniz, and Lauren Hedspeth

It was a tough battle the whole game, the Marlins had a 1-0 advantage in shots, but the Maroons had two corners compared to the Marlins one. In the second quarter, Virginia Wesleyan managed to get a shot on goal off a corner that was saved to keep the score at 0-0.

The Maroons came out at halftime with some good adjustments, outshooting the Marlins 4-2 and had a 6-0 advantage in corners, but the Marlins were much more efficient scoring two goals on two shots to take a 2-0 lead in the third. The first goal was a great team goal, as Hannah Gautreaux cleared the ball into the attacking circle where Landry Meyer took control of the ball and dragged two defenders to her, which opened up space for Lauren Hedspeth to take a wide open shot into the right side of the net to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. The second goal was worked well by the team as Kathrine Druiett got to the left side end line and passed it to Isabelle Rogers who spun around the goalie and defender worked her way to the right side of the net and shot it over the goalie's pads to put VWU up 2-0.

In the fourth quarter, the Maroons pushed to break down the Marlins' defense leaving openings in the Roanoke defense. Virginia Wesleyan took advantage on the counter and outshot the visitors 4-1, and were tied in corners taken at 1-1.
