Virginia Wesleyan Stings Yellow Jackets In 3-1 Comeback Win

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team ( 11-1, 3-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Randolph-Macon 3-1.

Berkley Miller recorded her 10th win in net and recorded a career-high seven saves in the win over Randolph-Macon. Katherine Druiett tallied two goals for a personal season-high.

With the stage set, it was an important conference game for both teams. The Yellow Jackets struck first scoring in the seventh minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. In the first quarter, RMC had a 3-1 shot advantage, a 4-1 corner advantage, and had one more save than the Marlins.

In the second quarter, Virginia Wesleyan bounced back as they were awarded a corner in the first minute of the quarter that led to two shots, one was kept out by a great defensive save by the Yellow Jackets. VWU kept up the pressure, and Katherine Druiett found room to dribble into the circle on the right side, cut back, and hit a shot to the far post to tie the game at 1-1. With 7:30 left in the half, Katherine Druiett won the ball back in the offensive zone and passed it to Landry Meyer who capitalized on the breakaway opportunity and took a 2-1 lead.

The third quarter was all Yellow Jackets as they out shot the Marlins 8-0 with five on target, but the first-year goalkeeper made all five saves to preserve Virginia Wesleyan's 2-1 lead heading into the fourth.

In the final frame of the game, the Marlins extended their lead as Lauren Hedspeth got it down the right flanks and passed it to Druiett who chipped it over the keeper to seal the 3-1 win over the the Yellow Jackets.
