The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (12-4, 4-3 ODAC) was defeated by No. 13 Lynchburg 5-1.
Berkley Miller received the loss and played all 60 minutes in net, allowed five goals, and tied a career-high 12 saves in the game.
The Marlins came out swinging as
Landry Meyer scored the first goal of the contest off a rebounded shot by
Isabelle Rogers to put the Marlins up 1-0. The Hornets responded in the 10th minute of play to tie the game at 1-1.
Lynchburg scored in the 24th minute of play to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Virginia Wesleyan held their own as the Hornets outshot VWU 9-4 with a 5-4 shots on target advantage, and LYN with an 8-1 penalty corner count in favor of the visitors.
After the break, neither team scored a goal and VWU was in striking distance heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets' offense increased the pressure as they scored three goals to seal the 5-1 win over the Marlins.
