The Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team (4-4-3) defeated Shenandoah University in a comeback win to improve their conference record to 4-1.
Marlins' goalkeeper,
Allie Greco, had a spectacular night, only allowing in one goal while making nine saves. Graduate student,
Camille Jernigan, scored her first goal as a Marlin; and
Shyenne Diaz was key to the Marlins' offense, scoring two goals.
Virginia Wesleyan started slow in the first half with only a single shot on goal compared to Shenandoah's three. However,
Allie Greco recorded three saves to prevent the Hornets from scoring in the first half.
Shenandoah got off to a quick start in the second half, scoring the first goal of the night less than five minutes into the period.
The Marlins optimized on corner kick opportunities to begin their comeback. In the 75th minute of the game,
Adrianna Gunther shouldered the ball off the corner kick, finding
Shyenne Diaz in the box, who finished the play for her first goal of the season. Two minutes later, the Marlins took advantage of another corner. One of the Shenandoah players went to head the ball back, but Marlin defender,
Camille Jernigan, was too quick, shooting over the heads of the Shenandoah defense to put the Marlins up 2-1.
With seven minutes remaining,
Emma Nguyen took a shot which was deflected by the Hornet's goalkeeper in the direction of
Shyenne Diaz, who was able to punt the ball into the net for the third and final goal of the night.
Virginia Wesleyan will return to competition on Sunday at 2pm against Averett University in Danville, Virginia for another ODAC clash.
