The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (3-14-1, 2-2-1 ODAC) lost to the No. 12 ranked team in the country, Lynchburg, 11-8.
The Marlins scored first as Jaelen Hines hit a solo home run in the top of the first. Lynchburg took the lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs.
In the top of the fourth, Clay Clarke walked with the bases loaded to score Matt Sinko, followed by a two-run double to left field by Chris Mitchell Jr. that scored John Bastiaans and Connor Hall to give the Marlins a 4-2 lead. The Hornets scored four in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead at 6-4.
In the top of the sixth, Chris Mitchell Jr. singled up the middle and scored Jake Ness, then Jaelen Hines hit a two-run homer that scored Chris Mitchell Jr to take a 7-6 lead. However, Lynchburg answered with five runs to take an 11-7 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Jalen Hines singled to left center and scored Keegan Megaro to cut the host lead to 11-8.
Jalen Hines led the offense as he went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, and 4 RBIs. And Chris Mitchell Jr. went 2-3 with a walk, hit a double, and had 3 RBIs.
Nick Beatty got the loss as he pitched 1.1 innings and faced 10 batters. He gave up four runs on four hits, walked two batters, and struck out two. Sal Lettieri and Zach Megaro were both effective in relief, pitching 1.1 and 1.0 innings respectively, and each only allowing one hit and no runs.
