Marlins defeat the Royals of Eastern Mennonite in regular season home finale

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University 59-54 on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins were led by senior Jordan Crump with 14 points while Amarion Wilson and Omari DeVeaux joined Crump in double-digits with 13 and 12 points respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern Mennonite opened the scoring with a three-pointer a minute and a half into the game, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 7-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to pul ahead 7-3. EMU pulled within two, 10-8 (14:19), however, VWU went on a 12-4 run over nearly an eight minute window to take a 22-12 lead with 6:56 remaining in the first half. The Royals added 10 points to their total in the first half while holding the Marlins to nine points the rest of the opening half as the teams headed into halftime with VWU leading 31-22. 

The Royals opened the second half on a 9-0 run to come back and tie the score at 31 all as the Marlins were held scoreless for nearly six minutes in the return to action after the break. Joey Lee hit a three-pointer with 14:18 on the clock to end the Marlins scoring drought. EMU knotted the score twice more, at 34 and 36 all, and were as close as one point several times, last at 53-52 VWU's lead (2:45), however, VWU held off the Royals in the final minutes going on a 6-2 run to win 59-54. 

KEY STATS
Senior Jordan Crump led the Marlins with 14 points, while Amarion Wilson and Omari DeVeaux joined Crump in double-digits with 13 and 12 points respectively. DeVeaux led the team in rebounds with 12 en route to collecting his first collegiate career double-double. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court again on Saturday, February 18, when they travel to Salem, VA to face the Maroons of Roanoke College in the regular season finale. Tip-off is set for 2 PM.
