Marlins defeat the Hornets of Shenandoah on Senior Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated the Hornets of Shenandoah University 77-60 on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Five Marlins scored in double-digits led by sophomore Amarion Wilson with 22 points tying his career-high set earlier this season at N.C. Wesleyan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams were neck and neck through the first four minutes as the Marlins held a slim 8-7 lead at 16:04, but the Hornets went on an 8-2 run taking a five-point lead, 15-10, at the 12:35 mark. VWU went on a 12-point run taking a 22-15 lead three minutes later after a pair of free throws fell in the basket from Amari Moorer. SU broke up the VWU scoring run with a jumper before the Marlins added six more points to their total leading by 11 points, 28-17 (7:08). The Hornets started chipping away at the Marlins lead spurred on from a three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half and in the final minutes SU went on a 14-7 run putting the score at 35-31 in VWU's favor. 

The Hornets battled with the Marlins for the opening six minutes of the second half staying within a few baskets of VWU. A three-point play by Amarion Wilson off a jumper and free throw gave Virginia Wesleyan a 10-point lead, 49-39, with 13:08 remaining on the clock. About five minutes later, VWU opened up a 20-point lead as Moorer placed a layup in the basket that put the score at 62-41. The Marlins maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the game as VWU added 15 points to its total score while SU added 19 to its score. At the final buzzer, the Marlins defeated the Hornets 77-60. 

KEY STATS
Five Marlins scored in double-digits led by sophomore Amarion Wilson with 22 points tying his career-high set earlier this season at N.C. Wesleyan. Khai Seargeant (14), Amari Moorer (13), Omari DeVeaux (10), and Jordan Crump (10) were the other four Marlins that scored in double-digits. Moorer led the team with six rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court again on Wednesday, February 15, when they return to Virginia Beach, VA to host the Hornets of Shenandoah University senior day. The tip-off time is set for 2 PM.
