Box Score Men's Soccer traveled to Towson, MD to take on Goucher College this afternoon. The match couldn't be any closer as the match had to be decided by a penalty kick shootout. The Marlins lost 3-5 in penalty kicks in the ECAC Quarterfinal.
The match started with the Gophers contesting the goal more than the Marlins. The Gophers registered 11 shots in the first half, and the Marlins shot six times.
In the 15th minute,
Nolan Schulte was the first player for the Marlins to register a shot attempt. Schulte had a shot on goal that was saved by Ale Sternini, the Gopher's goalie.
In the 26th minute,
Alex Moody played a ball to
Nolan Schulte who finished the ball into the back of the net to put the Marlins up 1-0.
However, in the 39th minute, the Gophers scored a goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Matt Yates faced 11 shots in the first half and ended the half with four saves.
In the 69th minute, the Gophers scored another goal to take a 2-1 lead.
A few minutes later, Deigo Armas scored a goal to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Marlins defense held the Gophers from scoring for the rest of regulation and held them to six shots in the 2nd half.
In overtime, the Marlins shot twice,
Josh Vincent shot wide, and Christopher Ortega Garcia registered a shot on target that was saved.
In the 96th minute, the Gophers recorded a shot on goal, and
Matt Yates was able to make the save.
In the 2nd period of overtime, neither team registered a shot, and the game was forced to a penalty shootout.
Goucher shot first and they scored to put the Score at 0-1 in PK's.
The 1st Marlin to shoot was
Everett McCloskey and he made his kick to put the score at 1-1.
The 2nd Gophers scored his penalty kick to put the score at 1-2.
The 2nd Marlin to shoot was
JaMarhe Wills and he made his kick to put the score at 2-2.
The 3rd Gophers scored his penalty kick and the score was now at 2-3.
The 3rd Marlin to shoot was
Nolan Schulte and he made his kick to put the score at 3-3.
The 4th Gophers were able to make his penalty kick and made the score 3-4.
Ilan Mejia was the 4th Marlin to shoot and Mejia missed his shot so the score remained 3-4.
The last Gophers to shoot his shot made his attempt and the Gophers won in penalty kicks 3-5.
The Marlins finished the 2023 season with a 13-3-2 record in overall play, and a 6-2-2 ODAC record.
