An Eagles three-pointer buzzer beater pushes Bridgewater past Virginia Wesleyan

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team fell to the Eagles of Bridgewater College 54-52 on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, VA. The Marlins were led by Omari DeVeaux with 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins opened the game on an 8-0 run before the Eagles found the scoreboard at the 15:55 mark on a three-pointer. Over the next three minutes, Bridgewater went on a 9-1 run to tie the score and claim its first lead with 12:10 left in the opening half. VWU took a 13-12 lead after a pair of baskets but BC scored seven in response to lead 19-13 until the 6:40 mark. Virginia Wesleyan scored a quick five points to pull within one, 19-18 (6:01), and from there remained within a point until the final 90 seconds when the Eagles scored a layup taking a 25-22 lead to head into the break. 

Bridgewater scored six points to open the second half taking a nine-point lead, 31-22, their largest of the game, within the first two minutes of action. Virginia Wesleyan chipped away at the Bridgewater lead over the next six minutes to take a 38-35 lead following a 16-4 rally. BC tied the score at 38 all, before VWU took a four-point lead 42-38 with 8:21 to play. The Eagles reversed the score advantage taking a three-point lead, 45-42 (5:39) of their own after scoring seven consecutive points. The Marlins answered by slowly coming back over the next five minutes taking a 50-49 lead with 37 seconds left on the clock. BC scored a layup with 23 seconds left only to have VWU respond with a layup from DeVeaux putting the score at 52-51. Bridgewater's Liam Caswell connected on a three-point shot with three seconds left on the clock to push the Eagles past the Marlins 54-52. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Omari DeVeaux with 21 points. Amarion Wilson was the only other Marlin with double-digit figures with 15 points. Amari Moorer and Eric Rowland led the team with seven rebounds each.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court again on Wednesday, February 1, when they host the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College. The tip-off time is set for 7 PM at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.
