Second half rally falls short as No. 18 Tigers defeat the Marlins

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team fell to the No. 18 Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College 73-66 on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins were led by Omari DeVeaux with 20 points and Jordan Crump with 18 of his own.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins opened the game on an 11-3 run with senior Jordan Crump scoring nine of the 11 points from three three-pointers. The Tigers climbed within one point, 11-10, but three consecutive baskets by VWU gave the home team a seven-point lead, 17-10. H-SC evened the score at 17 all before Crump hit another three to give the Marlins a 20-17 lead with 8:29 left in the opening half. A minute and a half went by before either team scored as Hampden-Sydney came back to even the score at 20 all. Omari DeVeaux gave VWU another three-point lead, 23-20, but H-SC evened the score and took the lead on an 8-0 run putting the Tigers ahead 28-23 at thee 3:12 mark. In the final three minutes the Marlins led the Tigers 9-7 putting the score at 35-32 at the half with Hampden-Sydney holding a slim lead. 

Virginia Wesleyan came out of the halftime break to pull within a point, 37-36 (17:47), but Hampden-Sydney went on a 14-6 run giving the Tigers and 11-point lead, 51-40 at the 13:15 mark. Over the next five minutes, the Marlins went on a 12-4 run climbing back within three points, 55-52 (8:34), following a jumper by Khai Seargeant. Hampden-Sydney reclaimed an eight point lead, 63-55, three minutes later (5:20), however a layup from DeVeaux and a three-pointer from Seargeant pulled Virginia Wesleyan back within three-points with 4:36 left on the clock. The Tigers pulled away opening up an eight-point lead with 22 seconds remaining in the contest and ultimately defeated the Marlins 73-66.

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Omari DeVeaux with 20 points while Jordan Crump added 18 points, scoring 16 in the first half. Khai Seargeant was the only other Marlin with double-digit figures with 13 points. Crump led VWU with six rebounds on the evening. 

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the court again on Saturday, February 4, when they travel to Lexington, VA to face the Generals of Washington & Lee University. The tip-off time is set for 2 PM.
