WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated the Hornets of Shenandoah University 71-55 on Wednesday evening in Winchester, VA.
Omari DeVeaux led the team with 18 points while
Eric Rowland and
Khai Seargeant both added 10 points each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets opened the scoring 90 seconds into the game with the Marlins responding about 20 seconds later to even the score. An
Eric Rowland three-pointer at 16:48 gave the Marlins a 5-4 lead but the Hornets answered with a pair of threes of their own taking a 10-5 lead. VWU went on a 7-0 run taking a 12-10 lead as the clock hit 11:42. The lead changed for the fourth time as Shenandoah connected on back-to-back three-pointers going up 16-12. A layup by
Khai Seargeant knotted the score at 16 all and the Marlins claimed a one-point advantage, 19-18, following a three-pointer by
Anthony Jackson. SU claimed their last lead of the game. 20-19, at the 7:09 mark before Virginia Wesleyan went on a 16-6 run taking a nine-point lead, 35-26 with 1:22 remaining until the halftime break. SU closed the half with five unanswered points putting the score at 35-31 at the buzzer.
VWU quickly opened up a nine-point lead, 40-31 after
Omari DeVeaux scored a layup and
Jordan Crump hit a three-pointer to start the half. SU pulled within five points, 40-35, but the Marlins pulled away taking a 10-point lead, 45-35, following an
Amari Moorer free throw at 15:34. Shenandoah came within nine points, 49-40, with 11:36 remaining but from there out, Virginia Wesleyan managed to maintain a double-digit lead, leading by as many as 19 points, 71-52. A three-pointer just before the buzzer for the Hornets put the final score at 71-55 with the Marlins walking away victorious.
