Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell to the Captains of Christopher Newport University (RV) in a midweek Cross Bay rivalry matchup. The Marlins opened the match winning the first set, but the Captains hung on to win the next three doling the Marlins their first loss of the season.

MATCH RECAP
After VWU took an early 3-1 lead, CNU evened the score at three all. The teams went back and forth knotting the score 17 times, the last at 22 all, before the Marlins were able to score three consecutive points to claim the opening set 25-22.
Set two started off very similarly to the first as the teams were tied at seven all through the early services. CNU took a five-point lead, 12-7, before VWU went on an 11-6 run knotting the score at 18 all on an ace by Abigail Mahoney. The teams stayed neck and neck throughout the remainder of the second set but the Captains pulled ahead 25-23 taking set two and evening the match score.
The third set was neck and neck as the teams sat tied at 11 all on a CNU kill. The Captains took off from their closing out the set on a 14-6 run putting the score at 25-17 and the match score 2-1 in CNU's favor.
Virginia Wesleyan held an early 8-3 lead as Mahoney recorded an ace that forced a CNU timeout. The Marlins led by nine points, 20-11, before the Captains climbed back to even the score out at 21 all. Christopher Newport edged past Virginia Wesleyan to win the fourth set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action this weekend when they travel to Huntingdon, PA, to play in the Asics Invitational hosted by Juniata College. The Marlins will face the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall, the Eagles of Juniata College, and the Bombers of Ithica College.
