Marlins defeat Guilford Quakers in three sets on Friday evening

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Quakers of Guilford College in three sets on Friday evening in ODAC competition at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.

MATCH RECAP
The first set began with the Quakers opening up a 10-5 lead on five kills, two aces, and a few Marlin errors. Virginia Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run with four kills and two Guilford errors taking a lead of 11-10. The score knotted up four times, last at 17, before GC scored three in a row taking a 20-17 advantage. VWU pulled within one, 20-19, before GC went up 22-20 following a service error. The Marlins evened up the score at 22 all before the Quakers went up by one, 23-22. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the set with three consecutive points, two kills and an Emma Claytor service ace, to win set one 25-22. 

After Guilford started the second set with a 3-1 lead, Virginia Wesleyan went on a 6-1 run taking a 7-4 lead with four kills, a Morgan Ludovici ace, and a Breana Brooks block aiding in the run. The Quakers climbed within one point, 11-10, but a 7-4 run by the Marlins gave the team an 18-14 lead. The teams traded pairs of points until VWU led 22-18 and from there Virginia Wesleyan closed out the set scoring three of the last five points to win set two 25-20. 

The Marlins took an early command of set three opening the match 5-1 with two Haley Sutton aces. a kill, and two Quaker errors. Virginia Wesleyan quickly grew its lead to 11-4 following a 6-3 run and then 16-7 after a 5-3 run. Guilford scored five consecutive points to pull within five points, 18-13, but Virginia Wesleyan closed out the set on a 7-3 run to win set three 25-15, and the match in three sets.
