Marlins splits against Muhlenberg and Salisbury in Saturday tri-match

SALISBURY, Md. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team split their two matches on Saturday afternoon at the Salisbury tri-match. The Marlins defeated the Mules in four sets while falling to the Sea Gulls in four.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins came out of the gate on fire in the opening set with a six-point run. Muhlenberg got on the board with a single point off a Virginia Wesleyan service error, but VWU took off again on a 12-0 run taking an 18-1 lead late in the set. Nine of the twelve points came off of Marlin kills. The Mules scored five points over eight serves which put the score at 21-6, but the Marlins scored four straight to take the opening set 25-6. 

Muhlenberg opened the second set taking an early 6-4 lead. The Mules maintained a three-point lead, 11-8, until the Marlins went on a 5-2 run to knot the score at 13 all. Muhlenberg College pulled by five, 22-17, but Virginia Wesleyan climbed back within two, 22-20, but the Mules closed out the set with three consecutive kills to claim the set 25-20. 

The Marlins opened set three by taking a 5-2 lead after a kill fell down from Breana Brooks. VWU increased their lead to six points, 11-5 after Kyleigh Castengera served up an ace to the Mules. Virginia Wesleyan led 16-7 following three consecutive kills from the Marlins.VWU maintained a seven-point lead throughout the remainder of the set to hold a 25-16 at the end of set three. 

The fourth set began with the Marlins jumping out to a 6-3 early advantage. After the Mules pulled back within two, 8-6, the Marlins went on a 7-0 run putting the score at 15-6. Muhlenberg fought back within seven points, 18-11, after a 5-3 run, but Virginia Wesleyan went on a seven-point rally to close out the set winning 25-11 and the match 3-1.

MATCH RECAP
After both teams scored three consecutive points, knotting the score at three all, the Sea Gulls went on an 8-1 run taking an 11-4 lead. The Marlins came back to even the score at 15 all following Virginia Wesleyan's 11-4 run. The two squads battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the set knotting the score six times, the last at 26, before VWU put down a pair of kills to win set one 28-26.

The Marlins came out in the second set taking a 7-4 lead. Salisbury climbed back to take an 11-10 lead before the score evened up at 12 all. The Marlins pulled ahead by three, 15-12, but the Sea Gulls went on a 5-2 run knotting the score at 17 all. SU pulled ahead 21-18 and held on to win set two 25-23. 

Salisbury took a 4-1 lead to start the third set, but Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at six all. The Sea Gulls took a 12-9 lead but the Marlins stuck with SU to knot the score late in the match at 23 all. Salisbury ultimately claimed the third set 25-23 after back-to-back blocks fell for points in the Sea Gulls favor.

The fourth set started similarly for the Marlins as set two as VWU took a 7-4 lead. Virginia Wesleyan led 11-7 before Salisbury went on an 8-2 run taking a 15-13 lead. VWU came as close as one point, 23-22, late in the set but SU again managed to get the last two points down to win 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Virginia Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday evening when they head up to the state capital to face Randolph-Macon in a midweek ODAC contest. The Yellow Jackets and Marlins meet at 7 PM for first serve.
