Marlins draw against the No. 23 Scots of Covenant College

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team ended regulation against the No. 23 Scots of Covenant College in a 2-2 draw on Saturday evening at the Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, VA. The goal scorers for the Marlins were Alex Moody and Nate Mitchell

FIRST HALF
  • The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half with neither team finding the back of the net for the first 30 minutes of the contest despite both teams getting several good shots on goal. 
  • In the 33rd minute, the Marlins broke onto the scoreboard as Alex Moody headed the ball into the back right corner of the net following the corner kick in from Noah Fowler. The goal was Moody's first of the season. 
  • Both teams had a few more good chances at the goals without the ball connecting with the back of the net as the Marlins led 1-0 at the half.
SECOND HALF
  • Both teams came out of the break hungry and the Scots needing to find a goal to tie the score. Covenant did just that in the 56th minute as a Scot forward squeaked a ball just past the Marlin keeper to even the score at one goal each.
  • Just under two minutes later in the 58th minute, Virginia Wesleyan took the lead as Nate Mitchell scored on a penalty kick putting the score at 2-1 Marlins. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan held its one-goal advantage for about 30 minutes before a foul just outside the box set Covenant up for a free kick that they converted into a goal to knot the score up at two all. 
  • The Marlins hurried to try and find the game-winning goal in the final three minutes of regulation, but despite several good attempts, their shots did not connect as the Scots and Marlins ended the match in a 2-2 draw. 
KEY STATS
  • Junior Alex Moody and sophomore Nate Mitchell scored the two Marlin goals. 
  • Freshman Noah Fowler assisted on Moody's goal in the first half. 
  • Griffin Potter (T: 5-1-1) played all 90 minutes in the cage giving up two goals and making two saves.  
UP NEXT
The Marlins are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they hit the road for the first time this season as they open ODAC competition at Averett University. Kick-off is set for 4 PM in Danville, Va.
