Marlins baseball scores six in 10 inning loss to Randolph-Macon College

ASHLAND, Virginia - The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan fell to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 7-6 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon in Ashland, VA.

The Yellow Jackets took the early lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning driving in a run on a sac fly to right field.

After neither team scored in the second inning, the Marlins evened up the score at one all with a single shot in the top of the third inning. Jaelen Hines scored the Virginia Wesleyan run on a wild pitch. 

VWU held R-MC off the board in the bottom of the third and took the lead in the top of the fourth posting four runs in the half inning. Two of the Marlins four runs came in on a Sam Kasprow single to left field with the bases loaded. Scoring on the play ere Ronaldo Del Duca and Miles Christian. During the next at-bat, with Connor Hall at the plate, two more runs came around as Hall hit a double to right center field scoring Hines and Kasprow for a 5-1 Marlins lead.

Randolph-Macon responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth and a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead by one, 6-5. Virginia Wesleyan knotted up the score in the top of the ninth as a Jake Ness groundout to short drove in Matt Sinko putting the score at 6-6.

VWU held R-MC off the board in the bottom of the ninth forcing extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Marlins were sent back to the dugout in order, while the Yellow Jackets got a runner on base with an infield single. An error and a single batted the runner around to third while a single up the middle scored the game-winning run for Randolph-Macon who claimed the 7-6 win. 

  • Connor Hall and Matt Sinko each recorded three hits in five at-bats.
  • Hall and Sam Kasprow led the team with a pair of RBI's each. 
  • Dominick Spinoso started the game on the mound for the Marlins throwing three innings during which he gave up one run on three hits while striking out two.
  • Connor Mock came in relief to throw two innings during which he gave up three runs on three hits. 
  • Blake Cuddington, Albert Clark, and Ian Brady each got a turn on the mound and recorded seven strikeouts combined, while giving up three runs on seven hits.
  • Brady (L, 2-4) got the loss giving up the seventh run in the bottom of the tenth.

NEXT UP
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action again on Saturday, April 30, when they return to TowneBank Park for the regular season finale against the quakers of Guilford College. Game times for the doubleheader are 12 PM & 3 PM, approximately, and prior to the first pitch of game one, the Marlins will recognize their 10 seniors.
