Quartet of Marlins record hat tricks in win over Gordon College

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team defeated the Scots of Gordon College 22-9 on Sunday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. Four Marlins scored at least three goals in contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Marlins got off to a quick start scoring three goals to start the match. Nathan Sheirburm Mark Sprague, and Tommy Faiella tallied the opening trio of goals. Gordon got on the board in the fourth minute of action putting the score at 3-1, before Chris Lindmeyer and Sprague added two more goals for Virginia Wesleyan.

The Scots put one more on the board in the first and opened the second with a goal to pull within tw goals, trailing 5-3. Sam Edwards hit the back of the net off a Joey Rayman assist before Gordon College added their fourth goal, again pulling within two, 6-4. VWU took control from there scoring five consecutive goals heading into the halftime break to lead by seven, 11-4, at the break. Jackson Dinger joined the scoring party along side teammates Faiella, Lindemeyer, Rayman, and Edwards, all of whom scored in the final five minutes of the second quarter. 

The teams traded a pair of goals to open the third quarter as Sheirburn and Faiella scored the first two goals after the break followed by two goals by Gordon. VWU added three more goals in the third quarter courtesy of Sprague, Lindemeyer, and Sheirburn, putting the Marlins up by ten, 16-6. GC added one more goal in the third as the teams headed into the final 15 minutes with the score sitting at 16-7.

VWU again scored the first goals of the quarter as Jack Butcher and Rayman put the Marlins up 18-7 with 14 minutes still to play. A pair of Scots goals sandwiched a Faiella goal as Gordon closed the gap to 10 goals trailing 19-9. Virginia Wesleyan controlled the final minutes of the game adding three more goals to their total putting the final score at 22-9. Daniel Auxier (2) and Gavynn Tawes contributed the final three VWU goals.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action next Saturday, March 12, at 3 PM, when they open up ODAC play against the Eagles of Bridgewater College.
