Marlins come back to defeat the Monarchs of Methodist for season sweep

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan defeated the Monarchs of Methodist University 11-7 on Wednesday afternoon in a midweek non-conference match-up to complete the season sweep over the Monarchs for the first time since 2018.

The Monarchs got the game started with a solo home run over the left field fence in the top of the first inning.

The Marlins did not score in the first or second innings but posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the third taking a 2-1 lead. Zion Ross came home following an error on a Jaelen Hines at-bat for the first run, while Hines stole  home on a double steal attempt.

Over the next two innings Methodist scored a pair of runs, one in each inning, to take the 3-2 lead midway through the fifth inning, but Virginia Wesleyan bounced back in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead off a double by Garrett Lyons that scored Hines and Matt Sinko

VWU scored again in the bottom of the sixth as a single by Hines scored Sam Kasprow putting the Marlins up 5-3. 

Methodist reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh inning scoring four runs to take a 7-5 lead. Virginia Wesleyan answered in the bottom half of the seventh with six runs to take an 11-7 lead. 

The first run scored off a Miles Christian single that brought in John Bastiaans. Christian scored shortly after on a wild pitch to knot the game at seven runs each. A single by Ronaldo Del Duca scored Ross and Kasprow to put the Marlins up 9-7. A single by Hines drove in Del Duca and Hines followed shortly after off a double by Sinko to put the final score at 11-7. 

  • Jaelen Hines scored three times on two hits while driving in two RBI. 
  • Sam Kasprow and Zion Ross both scored twice in the game.
  • Ross and Miles Christian each recorded three hits. 

NEXT UP
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, April 6th, when they head to Lynchburg, VA, to face the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
