VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team fell 14-9 in their season opener against the Knights of Neumann University on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA.

The Marlins started off hot taking a 4-0 lead after six minutes of action. Tommy Faiella, Chris Lindemeyer, and Mark Sprague (2) combined four the four goals. Neumann responded with three consecutive goals, two to close the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter, to pull within one, 4-3, with 12:16 remaining in the second. A pair of goals from Lindemeyer sandwiched a Neumann goal as VWU held on to a two goal lead, 6-4 at the halftime break.
The Knights started the third quarter with a pair of goals to knot the score at six all with 13:36 on the clock. VWU went on a 3-1 run taking a 9-7 lead, with 9:37 lef tin the third. Sprague scored the seventh goal, while Jackson Dinger collected the eighth, and Lindemeyer the ninth. Neumann took off from there scoring three goals to close the third quarter and claiming a 10-9 lead after 45 minutes of play. The Knights added four more goals in the fourth quarter to claim a 14-9 victory.
KEY STATS
- Chris Lindemeyer led the Marlins with four goals on 10 shots, six on goal. Mark Sprague recorded a hattrick and added an assist of his own.
- Jackson Dinger and Tommy Faiella both added a goal apiece with Dinger contributing three assists and Faiella one.
- Josh van Zuylen (L: 0-1) played all 60 minutes in goal giving up 14 goals while also making 18 saves.
