Marlins earn top seed heading into the ODAC Volleyball Tournament

VWU closes regular season at John's Hopkins tri-match

FOREST, Va. / BALTIMORE, Md. - The Old Dominion Athletic Conference office announced the seeding for the 2022 Women's Volleyball conference tournament and the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins claimed the top seed for the first time in program history.

With the top seed honors, VWU will have the opportunity to play at home throughout the ODAC Tournament including hosting the Championship match if the Marlins advance through the quarter and semifinal rounds. Virginia Wesleyan will open tournament action on Wednesday afternoon by hosting the Maroons of Roanoke College at TowneBank Arena in the Jane P. Batten Student Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The game time has yet to be determined.




Virginia Wesleyan concluded the regular season with a pair of matches on the road in Baltimore, Md., at John's Hopkins University where the Marlins competed against the hosting Blue Jays and the No. 6 Violets from New York University.

The Marlins dropped both contests but not without fighting in each set. Against NYU, VWU took the Violets (23-5) to 25-15, 25-16, 25-21, while when facing the Blue Jays (19-7) the Marlins took the scores to 25-22, 25-23, 26-24. 

KEY STATS

  • Taylor Paquette led the team attack on the day with 20 kills between the two matches. Abigail Mahoney recorded 14 kills of her own.
  • Morgan Ludovici contributed 13 kills and a team-high 19 digs on the day. 
  • Haley Sutton tallied 36 assists and two aces on the day along with eight digs and four kills. Special note: Sutton is now the VWU Volleyball program leader for service aces in a career with 215. 
  • Becca Hallingstad and Cara Caruso held down the back line as well with ten digs on the day each.
INSIDE THE MATCHES
GAME 1 - VWU vs #6 NYU
The Violets took an early set one lead over the Marlins after going on a five-point run that gave NYU a 9-4 lead. VWU could not close the gap that NYU had obtained and the Violets used a five-point run to close the opening set with a 25-15 score.

The Marlins came out in set two and took an early 6-3 lead, however, the Violets came back on a 7-1 run taking a 10-7 lead. VWU stayed close in the following few sets, but NYU scored six straight pulling ahead 18-11. Virginia Wesleyan scored five more points in the remainder of set two but fell 25-16. 

VWU again came out with an early lead sitting ahead 4-1, however, a five-point run by NYU gave the Violets a 6-4 advantage. The Marlins battled and knotted the score at nine all following a pair of kills, one each from Taylor Paquette and Jenna Waters, before the Violets scored three in a row pulling ahead 12-9. Virginia Wesleyan fought to stay within one or two points and despite trailing by five points (22-17), VWU came back within one, 22-21, after a 4-0 run. NYU halted the VWU run closing the set and match with the three final points taking set three 25-21 and the match in three sets.
