ROANOKE, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated Hollins University volleyball team in four sets on Saturday morning in ODAC action in Roanoke, VA. With the win, the Marlins sit tied for first in the ODAC Volleyball standings with Washington and Lee University, who VWU plays Wednesday night.

Hollins opened the first set by scoring a pair of points but Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 10-1 run that put the Marlins ahead 10-3. HU broke up the VUW run with a kill, putting the score at 10-4, before Virginia Wesleyan went on another run of seven points, claiming a 17-4 lead as Hollins called timeout to regroup. Coming out of the timeout Hollins scored on a blocked attack but Virginia Wesleyan scored three straight to take a 20-5 lead. Set one ended with VWU scoring five points to HU's six, three of which were Marlin service errors, as Virginia Wesleyan won set one 25-10.
VWU scored the first three points of set two before HU came back to even the score at seven all following a 7-4 run. The Marlins put down three in a row taking a 10-7 advantage and only allowed Hollins to score six more points the remainder of the set to take set two 25-13. Cara Caruso closed the set with an eight-point service run putting the Marlins up two sets to none.
The Marlins opened set three scoring the first two points but Hollins answered with a 4-0 jolt to take the slim lead. A 5-1 run by Virginia Wesleyan put the visitors ahead 7-5 before HU went on another 4-0 run taking a 9-7 lead. VWU evened things up at 11 all and the teams traded points until the score sat at 15 all before HU took a three-point lead, 18-15, following a 3-0 run. Virginia Wesleyan answered scoring four points in a row going up 19-18, and the teams again tied things up, this time at 19 all. The score last sat tied at 21 all and Hollins had the momentum to close out set winning 25-21.
VWU came out hungry in set four taking the 4-0 early lead. A service error by VWU and a kill by HU put Hollins on the board with the score at 6-2, before Virginia Wesleyan went on another 4-0 jolt taking a 10-2 lead. HU scored two more points sandwiching a VWU kill by Emma Claytor, as the score sat at 11-4. The Marlins increased their advantage to 13 points (17-4) following a six-point run with five points coming from Hollins errors. Virginia Wesleyan only allowed Hollins five points the remainder of the set while scoring eight of their own to win set four 25-9.
