LEXINGTON, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Generals of Washington & Lee University in four sets on Wednesday evening in ODAC action in Lexington, VA. With the win, the Marlins claim sole possession of first in the ODAC Volleyball standings.

The Marlins started the first set with a 7-2 run with kills from Abigail Mahoney and Emma Claytor capping the run. A block by Mahoney and Claytor gave VWU a 14-9 lead before a 5-0 run by WLU knotted the score at 14 all. The Marlins scored three to go up 17-14 but the Generals came back scoring four of their own pulling ahead 18-17. The teams traded points and tied the score six times, last at 23 all, before Washington & Lee claimed a 25-23 win.
Set two saw the Generals begin on an 8-3 run. WLU held a 13-8 lead before VWU scored four in a row to pull within one, 13-12. Washington & Lee held a 16-13 lead but Virginia Wesleyan scored four consecutive pulling ahead by one, 17-16. The score knotted up at 17, 18, and 19 all, but the Marlins went on a 6-4 run to close out the set winning set two 25-23.
The two teams were neck and neck through the early serves of set three as the score sat 8-7 in the Marlins favor. VWU scored three in a row pulling ahead 11-7, before WLU scored five consecutive taking a one-point lead 12-11. Both teams went on 3-0 runs with Washington & Lee leading 15-14 before Virginia Wesleyan went on a 7-1 rally taking a 21-16 advantage. The Generals climbed within one, 23-22 after a 6-2 run but the Marlins recorded a kill by Taylor Paquette and an ace from Jenna Waters for the last two points taking set two 25-22.
VWU opened set three on a 3-0 run before WLU went on a 3-1 run putting the score at 4-3 Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan scored six consecutive points going up 10-3. The Generals pulled within four, 10-6, but the Marlins reclaimed a six-point lead, that they held on to the remainder of the set, holding WLU to 15 points in the fourth set, as VWU won set four 25-15, and the match 3-1.
