Marlins keep Panthers at bay with four set win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College in four sets on Saturday morning to improve to 6-1 in ODAC competition.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins got out to an early 6-2 lead before the Panthers pulled back within two, 6-4. VWU went on a 5-1 run with all five points coming off kills from Taylor Paquette (3), Morgan Ludovici, and Emma Claytor to lead 11-5. Ferrum came within four, 12-8, before Virginia Wesleyan went on a 6-0 rally taking a 10-point lead, 18-8. The Panthers added five points throughout the remainder of the first set while the Marlins scored seven to take set one 25-13.

Ferrum came out hot in set two taking an early 8-3 lead. Virginia Wesleyan climbed back within one, 12-11, and 15-14, but the Panthers claimed a 20-16 lead after a 5-2 run. VWU knotted the score at 20, 21, 22, and 23 all, but FC put down two final kills to take set two 25-23. 

The Marlins responded to dropping set two by opening the third set on an 8-1 run. VWU opened up a 10-point lead, 14-4, following a kill from Paquette. Virginia Wesleyan maintained a 13-point lead throughout the remainder of the set and only allowed Ferrum to score four more points as the final score sat at 25-8. 

The Panthers took the early lead 4-1 before the Marlins came back to knot the score at six all. The teams were neck and neck through the next several services as the score sat even at 10 all, but the Marlins scored four consecutive points to go ahead 14-10. Four more VWU kills put the Marlins ahead 18-13, before the Panthers clawed back within two points, 20-18. Virginia Wesleyan closed out the set on a 5-2 run to win set four 25-20 and the match 3-1.
