Marlins narrowly fall to Quakers in 51-50 ODAC contest

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team narrowly fell to the Quakers of Guilford College 51-50 on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The Marlins got the scoring started with five points in the first 70 seconds. Neither team found another score until the 4:34 mark when Guilford hit a three pointer to get on the scoreboard. Celeste Rucker scored a basket at 3:17 putting VWU up 7-3, only to have the Quakers respond 17 seconds later with the score sitting at 7-5. Lenah Clements added the last basket of the first quarter at the 50 second mark as VWU led 9-5 heading into the second quarter. 

VWU opened the second with a 4-1 run going up 13-6 but GC climbed back tying the score at 13 all with two minutes to play in the half. Bianca Atkinson hit a three pointer giving the Marlins a 16-13 lead but the Quakers got the last points of the half scoring five points in the last 58 seconds to lead 18-16 going into the intermission. 

Guilford came out of the break on an 11-2 run putting the score at 29-18 with 4:30 to play in the third quarter. The Marlins pulled within four points, 33-29, following an 11-4 run over a three minute span. GC added four more points in the final minute and a half of the third to lead by eight, 37-29, heading into the final quarter. 

VWU used the first three minutes of the third quarter to come back and take the lead 42-40 all following an 13-3 rally. The teams traded baskets back and forth and knotted the score three times but the Quakers were able to hold off the Marlins to win 51-50 in a close ODAC showdown.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams with 10 points. Lenah Clements was close behind with nine points while Bianca Atkinson added eight. 

GUILFORD LEADERS
The Quakers were led by Caroline Wilkerson with 14 points while Lindsay Gauldin and Carleigh Perry each added 12 points a peice. Perry led the team with 12 rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team is back in action on Saturday January 29, when they travel to Lexington, VA to face the Generals of Washingotn & Lee University.
