Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College and the Avenging Angels of Meredith College on Saturday morning to wrap up the 2021 Marlin Invitational Volleyball Tournament in TowneBank Arena at the Jane P. Batten Student Center in Virginia Beach, VA.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins opened first set quickly taking an 8-1 lead over the Golden Tornadoes. Five Geneva attack errors helped to give Virginia Wesleyan a 16-7 lead through the middle of the first set. The Marlins closed out the set on scoring nine points including four kills to take the first frame 25-18.
After going back and forth in the opening serves, Virginia Wesleyan scored seven straight points to lead 13-4 after a kill from Kathryn Yeager. Geneva Closed within seven points, 15-8, but the Marlins shutdown the Golden Tornadoes taking set two 25-12. Four kills and two service aces by Haley Sutton helped in the final 10-4 run by the Marlins.
VWU again got off to a hot start taking a 7-2 lead that expanded into a 14-5 advantage. Geneva climbed within six points, 20-14, but the Marlins held them off to win set three 25-16.

MATCH RECAP
Meredith started the set taking a 4-2 lead early on, but Virginia Wesleyan came back to knot the score at seven all following a pair of Marlin kills and a Meredith error. VWU went on a 4-1 run capped by an Emma Claytor kill putting the score at 11-8. The Avenging Angels pulled within a point, 11-10, but the Marlins went on a 5-0 run taking a 16-10 lead. After trading points and running the score to 19-14, VWU closed out the set on a 6-1 rally to win 25-15.
The Avenging Angels came out in set two taking an 8-3 lead early on and led 12-5 following a pair of Marlin errors. Meredith continued to pull away leading by as many ass 11 points, 18-7, but five consecutive kills by Virginia Wesleyan closed the gap to six, 18-12. Following their timeout, Meredith went on a 4-1 run to lead 22-13, however Virginia Wesleyan fought their way back from trailing by nine points to win by two, 27-25, following a 14-4 rally. Eight Meredith errors and five Marlin kills contributed to the rally that put the Marlins up two sets to none.
Virginia Wesleyan carried the momentum from the second set into the third and took a 9-4 lead after the opening rounds of serves. Meredith climbed within a point, 17-16, of the Marlins after three straight kills. VWU maintained a slim lead 20-18 after an ball handling error, but closed out the set with five kills to win the set 25-19 and the match three sets to none.
