After trading points through the opening serves of th first set, the Marlins went on a 5-0 run taking a 9-5 lead. VWU held on to their five point lead and increased it to seven after three consecutive kills put the score at 18-11. Roanoke pulled within four, 18-14, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with four points in a row to claim an eight point lead 22-14. The Maroons scored five points to try and close the gap, but the Marlins scored the three points needed to take the opening set 25-18.
VWU opened set two on a 5-1 run and maintained a six-point lead, 11-5, after an Emma Claytor and Alexis Davies-Hackenberg block. A block by Kathryn Yeager gave the Marlins a seven point lead, 16-9, and after a pair of kills and an RC error VWU held the 20-12 lead. The Maroons scored four more points to the Marlins five as VWU took set two 25-16.
Roanoke opened set three taking a 7-4 lead. Virginia Wesleyan climbed back to tied and take the lead 16-13 following 12-6 rally for the Marlins. The Maroons reclaimed the lead 19-18 but VWU tied the set again at 19 all off a kill by Sydney Collins. Roanoke closed out the set on a 6-2 run to win the set 25-21 and put the match score at 2-1.
The Maroons held an early 6-3 lead but the Marlins countered with a 7-2 rally taking a 10-8 lead of their own. The teams traded the lead twice and were knotted at 13 all when Roanoke took a 17-14 following a 4-1 run. Virginia Wesleyan answered with a 6-1 rally to take 20-18 lead before Roanoke knotted the score at 20 all. The teams sat tied at 22 all before the Marlins closed out the set scoring on three of the last four serves to win 25-23 and take the match 3-1.
