VWU Volleyball gets back on track with win over Saint Mary's College of Maryland

SAINT MARY'S CITY, Maryland - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team defeated the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland in three sets on Wednesday evening at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena in St. Mary's City, MD.

MATCH RECAP
The Marlins held the early lead 5-3 over the Seahawks but SMCM came back to take a 7-5 lead following four consecutive points. Virginia Wesleyan came back to knot the score at 13 all and took a two-point lead, 17-15, on four consecutive points of their own. VWU opened up a five-point lead, 21-16, and held off SMCM who came as close as three, 23-20, to take set one 25-20. 

The second set opened up with the Marlins taking a 10-4 lead after VWU put down our kills in a row. Virginia Wesleyan maintained an eight-point lead throughout the remainder of the set and took the second frame 25-17 going up 2-0 in the match.

After the Marlins opened the third set on a 5-0 run, the Seahawks responded by coming back to knot the score at 11 all and took their first lead 12-11 on a Marlin attack error. VWU responded with a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead 17-12 but SMCM fought back to knot the score at 20 all. Saint Mary's took the lead 22-21 but Virginia Wesleyan put down three kills in a row taking a 24-22 lead. SMCM scored their 23rd point to close the gap to one, but VWU won he third set 25-23 after Morgan Ludovici put down a kill winning the match in three sets.

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Lynchburg, VA for a trimatch and the ODAC conference opener. The Marlins will face the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg at 1 PM and will follow with a match against future ODAC foe, the Cougars of Averett University at 3 PM.
